| Separation of a Salt, Sand, and Water Mixture| Jamie Schurz and Austin Hoggard| | Date experiment was performed: September 6 and September 7| | | Introduction Purpose: The purpose of the experiment was to use various lab equipment and lab techniques to separate a mixture of salt, sand, and water. Background: An element is the simplest form of a substance that retains the properties of that substance. A compound is a substance formed by combining two or more elements set in fixed proportions. We will write a custom essay sample on Mixture Lab Write Up or any similar topic only for you Order Now A mixture is a system of two or more distinct chemical substances. Unlike compounds, mixtures can be physically combined. Because the components are physically combined, they can also be separated using physical properties. Physical properties are properties that do not change the chemical nature of matter. In this lab, a mixture of salt and sand will be separated using the listed equipment and separation techniques. Hypothesis: If a mixture of sand (3. 3g), salt (1. 2g), and water is separated using filtration and boiling point, then most of the sand and salt will be recovered. Safety Information: During the experiment, appropriate safety wear should be worn at all times such as: goggles and an apron (to prevent salt or hot water from entering the eye). Beaker tongs should be used to remove the heater beaker from the appropriate heating fixture and then it should be carefully transported onto the designated pressed fiber pad to cool. Materials and Methods * * Graduated cylinder * Small beaker (100 mL) * Large beaker (600 mL) * Hot plate * Small ring * Funnel * Filter paper * Glass stir rod with rubber policeman * Hot mitts * Beaker tongs * Pressed fiber pad * Weigh boat * Electronic balance * Scoops * Salt and sand sample * water Experimental Procedure 1. Put on appropriate safety wear. 2. Begin this experiment with 47 mL of water, 1. 2 g of salt, and 3. g of sand. * Use the 100 graduated cylinder to find the 47 mL of water, reading from the meniscus. * Put the weigh boat onto the electronic balance and zero it out, then slowly add the salt until you have 1. 2 grams of it. Do the same for the sand. * Also mass the larger of the two beakers 3. Combine the 1. 2g of salt and 47 mL of water into the 100 mL beaker and stir until the salt is dissolved 4. Add the sand and wait until it settles onto the bottom of the beaker. 5. Mass the filter paper and then fold it into a small cone. Wet sides before placing into funnel that is inside a ring stand. Place larger beaker underneath funnel. 6. Slowly pour sand and salt mixture through filter paper. Let the sand dry. 7. Take large beaker with salt and water and place on top of a hot plate. Set hot plate onto its highest setting and let boil. 8. Once salt starts popping lower temperature on hot plate. When most of the water has evaporated remove from hot plate using beaker tongs and let rest on pressed fiber pad. 9. Turn hot plate off. 10. Mass out recovered sand and salt. Results Raw Data: object| Mass (g)| starting mass of salt| 1. 2g| Starting mass of sand| 3. 3g| Dry filter paper| 0. 7g| Larger of the 2 beakers| 103. 1g| Total mass of beaker/salt (after)| 105. 3g| Mass of recovered salt| 2. 2g| Total mass of filter paper/sand (after)| 4. 1g| Mass of recovered sand| 3. 4g| Important results: * The mass of recovered salt was 2. 2g * The mass of recovered sand was 3. 4g * The percent error for the mass of recovered salt was 83% error * The percent error for the mass of the recovered sand was 3% * The percent yield for the mass of the recovered salt was 183% * The percent yield for the mass of the recovered sand was 103% Calculations: Discussion Expected results v. Actual results: In the experiment, the mass of the salt recovered was larger than the mass of the amount of salt that was started out with. This may be due to the tap water that was used not being pure or that some sand was small enough to not be filtered out. Analyze experimental error: During the experiment, instead of measuring the water out to exactly 47mL, around 60 mL of water was used. This could have caused there to be extra water during the final measurement. There was not enough time to boil off the extra water; this was done by another person later without either partner in the group supervising. Also, when looking for the sand sample the next day, it was missing; so another group’s sand data was massed instead Improvements: Having a longer time to conduct the experiment might have changed the data. Instead of leaving the sand sample in the open on a table to all classes, it may have been better for them to be separated more. Results in terms of the purpose: The goal was to get most of the salt and sand back through filtration and evaporation. Most of the sand was recovered; however there was a great deal of added mass to the salt (around 1g). The goal was met as far as data is concerned. Conclusion: The goal of the experiment was to see if using boing point and filtration could recover close to the same amount of salt and sand put together in a mixture. The experiment revealed a percent yield of 183% for salt and 103% for sand, which does support the hypothesis that using those two techniques, about the same amount of salt and sand would be recovered. The above-listed elements need proper in-depth analysis so that the comparison becomes easier for B Bakery (Collier, 2015). Capacity to record financial document, reports and financial statements- To compare with different accounting software, it is important to judge the unique features of the accounting software on how these accounting software record financial document, reports and financial statement for specific period of time. To start with, MYOB is one of the accounting software that has adequate capacity to record different data within the system (MYOB Accounting System. 2017). Payment related structure of staff members- Payment structure differs from accounting software to other based on several factors. To that, every accounting package like MYOB, XERO and DacEasy, there is different aspect altogether when payment structure is concerned. XERO is accounting software that is beneficial at the time of automatic bank reconciliation. MYOB is one of the accounting software that can be used at the time of creating various alternatives and managing with the salaries and tax status of the employees who are working for the business enterprise (Mancini, Dameri Bonollo, 2015). Level of risk and sustainability- The three accounting software packages (XERO, MYOB and DacEasy) that are compared in the present section are error-free and sustainable by nature that completely depends upon the capability of the users on how they make best use of these accounting software. Time scheduling and level of complexity- At the time of evaluating with the comparison part among different accounting software packages, it is noted that XERO was successful in providing easy online transactions but the initial process was little bit complex (Grabski, Leech Schmidt, 2013). On the other hand, DacEasy helped users with simple operations especially at the time when billing is done within the stipulated time frame. On analysis, it was found that MYOB was the simplest of all the other two accounting software discussed earlier as people understood the software very quickly. The only criteria that were needed to understand the accounting software was a person who has basic knowledge of accounting and bookkeeping. The accounting software is of great help to the users and companies at the time of creating billing on credit terms (Lipi, Rama Agaraj, 2015). Business organization that deal in credit transactions more, MYOB is the best accounting software package that should b e preferred by the business to carry out the transactions in smoother terms. Flexibility- On comparing all the accounting software, XERO was quite flexible as it can operate advanced third party payrolls. In addition, the accounting software package even provides free trail training for the small business companies. On the other hand, DacEasy is not flexible as it can generate only 50 reports. The best flexible accounting software package is MYOB as it has the capacity to generate 175 reports. These reports are helpful in keeping track of information or data about customers, suppliers, vendors and other parties as well (Khalil Zainuddin, 2015). Sundry creditors and debtors- On comparing, it is noted that MYOB is an accounting software that support e-payments as well as e-receipts when it comes to billing for its creditors and suppliers. On the contrary, DacEasy only operates in printing cheques and calculating the purchase order quotes. The other accounting software package named as XERO operates on creating of purchase orders as well as claiming those expenses when it comes to creditors (Kearns, 2014). Operating expenses- On comparison, it can be stated that both operating and implementation costs incurred for installing the accounting software can be categorized from medium to high. To that, single version software cost less as compared to multiple version software. Therefore, the cost is incurred and borne by the specific business that depends majorly on its nature or size of firm that they desire to carry while using any of the accounting software (Ismail King, 2014). Selection of most suitable vendor After comparing accounting software packages, it is now important for B Bakery to select suitable vendor so that they can keep a track of all the financial information (Hall, 2012). B Bakery is a medium sized enterprise and lack more money to invest in installing the accounting software. It is for this reason B Bakery should use medium-end accounting software as it will best suit their needs in the business operations. XERO is one of the accounting software that helps in calculating automated bank reconciliation statements (Xero. 2017). This particular accounting software package mainly manages transactions related to accounts receivable. On analysis, it was noted that DacEasy was not suitable for B Bakery as the features that are needed by the bakery firm are not present in the given accounting software (Iskandar, 2015). Both XERO and MYOB are suitable for B Bakery. But the best one is MYOB that should be adopted by B Bakery to record the financial transactions in an effective way. On implementing MYOB accounting software, B Bakery can easily generate wide range of reports and track the financial transactions. The selected accounting software package actually takes into account credit transactions where the bakery firm gets involved in the distribution activities and continues with the credit function that best suit their needs and expectations (Hoskin, Fizzell Cherry, 2014). There are several reasons that make MYOB accounting software package the best choice for B Bakery. MYOB is one of the accounting software package that help at the time of calculating inventory costs through use of LIFO and FIFO method. The accounting software help in dealing with both account payable and accounts receivable transactions. The selected accounting software package generates accurate reports that are not feasible for any of the other accounting software packages. It is important to get access of systematic information and this is possible by implementing MYOB software by B Bakery for proper data transmission (Hopwood, Leiner Young, 2012). Conclusion From the above analysis, it is noted that B Bakery was still using manual way to record financial transaction that are time consuming and generate inaccurate results most of the time. To reduce or minimize the level of discrepancy, it is important for B Bakery to implement suitable automated accounting systems that best suit its business need and requirements. After implementation of MYOB accounting software, B Bakery will face no issues that were noted earlier. Installing accounting software cost huge and this can be a problem by the company. As the company has low budget and minimum employees working for the bakery firm, it is recommended medium-end accounting software that can be easily affordable by the management of B Bakery. MYOB software will help B Bakery firm to improve the security issues in accounting and get access to the invoices to the customers. Life In The Universe Essays - Evolutionary Biology,

Life In The Universe In the selection I have chosen Chapter 6 of Life in the Universe; The Evolution of Life on Earth begins with the theories of Darwin and natural selection and how survival of the fittest was one of the main theories of evolution of life of an organism. Although it is a good theory, and has been tested through years it is not one of the main priorities of evolution. There was a reason of an outside force that forced the funas to extinction, not because it was unable to adapt to an environment. Also the past of origin goes too far back and is so complicated that there is no sure way to point a certain time or place in the history of our origin, unlike the work of nature. For example Homo sapiens come to be through neural complexity. Human arose from thousands of events happening in time that altered our past in a dramatic way. In order to understand the drastic changes we have to understand not just the principals of evolution but to understand the theory and life styles of fossils foun d. Complex creatures dont mean that it has a better chance of survival and evolving into something better. Yet the simplest form of creation like bacteria still rule all with the enormous amount occupying the earth. Still the more complex we are doesnt mean we have a better chance of survival. More complex animals like dinosaurs have already been extinct, so that tells us a great deal about evolving or surviving in the future. Bacteria occupy a wider range of space on earth and are an indestructible type of organism. Humans and other type of complex organisms have to worry about their extinction while bacteria on the other hand have a low chance of getting wiped out. Even as they are simple organisms they also have the same chance as we do to evolve without the tough struggle. Comparing the two it shows that complexity was not good or favored issue in evolution. Complexity is probably a bias made by us for the reason of our being and our evolution. Evolving in such a way, it would state that animals evolve by greater complexity, or ecological adaptation with the theories of Darwin. Still there is no proof to us that this was true. Also if complexity was such a great thing why did it take so long for evolution of these type of species (including us). With the evolution of species some must get erased to make way for new animals to emerge, for instance environmental changes. Dinosaurs for an example was thought to rule over the earth before mammals but the truth stands out that mammals and dinosaurs coexisted together for about 100 million years, just that mammals were small creatures. History books tend to be bias about the way that we evolve to this state. Even in books they state humans as the last of the evolutionary chain when other animals are evolving ahead or with us. They dont talk about the past of the chain and only little bits and pieces but the bias point of what has only evolved at that moment. Many species with multicellular structure evolve to great numbers but those experiments died out the few remaining branches branched out to more different types but they all have basic anatomies. Mass extinction is another reason of evolution is through sudden changes impacts that happen quickly that wipes out a lot of species but the best equipped tend to survive and evolve more differently to suit the environment, like Darwinian. It is thought that mammals survive that castrophobic moment in time is due to the very small size they were, where as the dinosaurs in great size died out. They have a greater chance of not getting extinct by the small size and able to hide in many more places and it was easier for them to branch out to the territory of the dinosaurs since they were extinct. With the theories of evolution humans do not want to see themselves as an insignificant branch of the tree of evolution. So the theories of us dominating all and how

Free Essays on Forensic Science And Technology

"Forensic Science and Technology" Rape, murder, theft, and other crimes almost always leave a devastating mark on the victim. More often than not, it would be impossible to identify the perpetrator a crime without forensic science and the technology it uses. Forensic science allows investigators to unmask the secrets of the crime scene. Evidence gathered at the crime scene helps to identify the guilty party, murder weapon, and even the identity of the victim. The new technologies enables the forensic experts to have better and faster access to accumulated information, to be more accurate in the identification of victims or delinquents, and minimizes the possibility of wrongful accusations. New technology has improved the methods and techniques that forensic scientists and law enforcement investigators use, in order to provide a safer environment for other people. Information technology is one of the most important aspects in forensic science. It is very important for the forensic experts to receive the undisturbed evidence, such as fingerprints left at the crime scene, as quickly as possible, for more accurate readings. Thus using space technology, such as satellite communication, enables the forensic experts to "gather and digitize evidence at the crime scene, enter it into an on-site computer, and beam the data to a crime lab for swift analysis" (Paula, 12). Therefore, due to the use of this technology, forensic experts in laboratories can examine the evidence in short time, and the possibility of damage or unlawful manipulation of the evidence before the trial is minimal (Paula, 12). More often than not, "criminals" wear gloves at the time of the crime, thus to obtain a fingerprint can be a difficult task. However, they may leave footprints behind, which "are often left in unusual places, such as a window ledge, in a flower bed or on a piece of furniture (May, 18). Critically evaluate three different political ideologies. Consider the Essay

Critically evaluate three different political ideologies. Consider the origins of each ideology and make links to Education in practice - Essay Example Primarily the political ideologies of the late 18th century were the basis of modern political science. This paper deals the three political ideologies that are communism, socialism, and fascism. The paper states the basic theme behind these ideologies as well as it discusses the historical background and origin of socialism, communism and fascism in different parts of the world. The important feature of this paper is to critically analyze the working of educational systems under above mentioned school of thoughts. Communism is actually a political ideology that deals with the common control of control of economy in the society. Communism is derived from French word â€Å"commun† means common or general. Communism can be stated as a revolutionary socialism based on the theories of the political philosophers Karl Marx and Friedrich Engel emphasizing common ownership of the means of production and a planned economy (Hutchinson Encyclopedia, 1996). Communism is a contemporary political movement that focuses to defeat the capitalism through revolution and therefore, create an egalitarian culture in which the entire financial system is owned by the general public. Karl Marx declared it as the last phase of human society that would be succeeded through a grassroots revolution (Walicki, 1995). The principle held is that each should work according to its capacity and receive according to their needs. The difference between â€Å"communism† itself and working towards communism is same as the difference between constructing and living in a house. In fact, the ideal communist state of USSR never claimed of achieving the communism in true sense. Practically what ever had been done in Russian state that was an endeavor to do the work required to establish a communist culture. In political point of view, communism pursues to bring down the capitalism via proletarian revolution. After the revolution of 1917, the first communist state was

Process Mapping Speech or Presentation Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Process Mapping - Speech or Presentation Example The output to this process might be patient is referred to any specialist doctor or diagnosed or treated. The services or care for time, diagnosis, treatments have to be managed by the individual doctor (health care provider) for converting input into output. In the large care facility or hospital, the processes are quite different and integrated. The health care delivery process can be explicitly shown as model developed by Roth (1993) (fig1 Appendix). Process mapping developed by an engineer, Frank Gilbert in early 20th century has been frequently used in the field of engineering and other industries for the last five or six decades, it is only during the 1980s health care providers in the USA began to develop the process mapping/pathway tool in ‘Managed Care’. Scope and Objective of Process Mapping It is one of the most effective ways to understand the real issues from the patient’s perspective, and to recognize opportunities for improvement. Finally, the only person who experiences the whole journey is the patient. Process mapping helps perceive accurately in making decisions and understanding based on ground reality rather than the preconceived ideas of how the service works. The field of vision of the management in a medical condition or treatment is divided into a series of sequential events, for instance, activities, interventions, or personnel involvement. The series of these events between two stages (from admission to the critical care facility to release from the hospital room) can be viewed as a patient pathway or process of care. Changing and correcting measures of the process mapping/patient pathway involve immaculate coordinated application of multidisciplinary practices to boost medical efficacy and efficiency by excluding ineffective and unnecessary steps. The resulting data by process mapping can be used to redesign the patient pathway, improving the quality and efficiency of patient management. Reviewing the care process, patient pathway is highly recommended and beneficial that should include measures to improve patients’ satisfaction or quality or cost of a particular medical service. It is imperative to emphasize that process mapping is all about doing something better than previous attempts to really understand the patient’s experience at various steps of their journey, and there is no way to find fault with. Organizing a Process Mapping Activity A process mapping operation should be a gratifying and creative experience for involved personnel. It requires a planned and coordinated approach, as even the simple and straightforward patient journeys can be tortuous, with many entangled events. Elements in developing patient/process pathways can be depicted as follow: Choosing a clinical area to be considered for the exercise of care mapping: Selecting any important area of practice/activity should be the first stage to start with. Then every possible step should be structured by drafti ng the whole process pathway by having written record, drawing and diagram. Senior management and clinical staff must share and agree on the objective and scope. The strategic decision is imperative, which ensures that the whole team works towards a defined goal. To begin the process, it is desirable to have a team of four or five key persons, preferably, including someone with exposure or experience of lean thinking transformation with a plan for the project and its scope in place as envisaged in a flow diagram (fig2 Appendix). The required criteria in the selection of the personnel who would take part in the process mappin

Roller-coaster of Emotions Essay Example for Free

Roller-coaster of Emotions Essay The plain was rich with crops; there were many orchards of fruit trees and beyond the plain the mountains were brown and bare (3) Ernest Hemingway, A Farewell to Arms. To the innocence of children fruit trees and plains is all they are aware of but in fact, what is beyond is what makes Ernest Hemingway want to explain, that beyond those plains there has been chaos and terrible deaths. After a scanning the entire landscape, the eyes can come across the true reality of the war, which made fruitless trees, beat up grounds, chaos, but also soldiers that have learned the true meaning of what war really is. Frederic Henry, the protagonist in Hemingways literary war novel, comes across the reality what life has to offer and overcomes many obstacles that changes him to become the person he ends up being towards the end of the novel. In his novel, A Farewell to Arms, Ernest Hemingway demonstrates that the destructiveness of war turns him from the naive solider, to the being in love, and finally to Henry the person that sees the world as a bad place that destroys a family. To begin with, Henry has no personal control with his temptations towards women, drinks excessively and simply has carelessness revolving him. The way that Henry enjoys obliterating war is being with women and drinking alcohol which lets him get away for a while. Henry has come across a person that cares for him and wants him to be on the right path, that person is the priest. Trying to get Henry out of his disastrous life, his friend the priest, recommends that Henry visits Abruzzi because it will let Henry become a better person. The priest comes across Henry and wants him to prosper and offers Henry to see Abruzzi and visit my [the priests] family at Capracotta (8), but instead the captain wins over Henry by saying, come one†¦ We go whorehouse before it shuts (9). Henry leaves that night with a simple good-night towards the priest and wonders off with the rest of the men. The reality of Henrys decision was that he wants to do what is right, but can never manage to do the prudent thing. Henry could have stayed home with the priest but instead his temptations leads him to the wron path. Later on that night Rinaldi asks Henry how the night went. Just like men talk Henry starts going on about how he had a beautiful time every where he went and Rinaldi is there to cheer him on. Rinaldi is almost the exact mirror image as Henry as they perceive women, Rinaldi confirms to Henry that in this town we have beautiful English girls. I am now in love with Miss Barkley (12). Henry’s main goal is to get pleasures that are easy and fast, he calls those strange excitement which shows that he has little or no ability to feel satisfied. Frederic Henry has not been able to find his inner self, he only knows what men in war like to do best; Henry drinks alcohol visits the whorehouses to substitute not being able to figure himself out. To come to a conclusion that the people that want to help him, Henry ignores them and shows this when he sat next to the priest and he was disappointed and suddenly hurt that I [Frederic] had not gone to Abruzzi. He had written to his father that I [Frederic] was coming and they had made preparations (13). This is significant because it shows that the help his close friend offers means nothing to him, he confesses that while going out it lets him get a grip of his emotions; something which he cannot do while sober. The way Henry sees things is that people settle for a small amount of pleasure instead of going the extra mile in order to get what they really want. When Henry starts changing is when he meets Catherine Barkley and his love towards her becomes a role in his transformation in his personality. Catherine at first is just someone that attracted Henry to her, her tawny skin and petite body was a reason why she caught his eye. He has found himself fallen for someone and is constantly wanting to be with her. He searches for her, but she was not in the garden and I [Frederic] went to the door of the villa where the ambulances drove up. Inside he saw the head nurse, who said Miss Barkley was on dutytheres a war going on, you know (22). Henry clearly knew that a nurse in war has a stressful duty and has hardly any time to spend time with their loved ones. Henry wants to be with her and no longer is going around with other women, he wants to be with Miss Barkley and he wants to go the extra mile to go in search for her, just to sound some time together. He is so eager to be with her that he goes the next evening to the hospital to see her but has to wait until she came down. While he sits down waits for her he sees every detail inside the hospital, something he never did before, there were many marble busts on painted wooden pillars along the walls of the room they used for an office†¦they had complete marble quality of all looking alike (28). He is patiently waiting for Catherine, meanwhile he is staring at his surroundings. He has changed into a different man than what he was before he met Miss Barkley. They see each other and she asks if he loves her, he replies with a yes but seems unsure of it. While they converse one thing leads to another and they begin kissing, Frederic sees that both her eyes are shit and thinks to himself, I did not love Catherine Barkley nor had any idea of loving her. This was a game, like a bridge, in which you said things instead of playing cards. Like a bridge you had to pretend you were playing for money or playing for some stakes. Nobody had told me what the stakes were. It was all right with me (30-31). At this point he just wants someone to play around with instead of learning the true meaning behind what love really is. Then becoming injured in war awakens Henry and love has put him to the test. I went out the door and suddenly I felt lonely and empty†¦when I could not see her there I was feeling lonely and hallow (41). His real emotions towards her start rising out when he sees that she can really take care of him by which he was injured terribly. Henry suddenly begins to be more aware of other people rather than just himself and it leads towards a step forward in his persona. The termination of Henrys transformation leads into the last words of the novel, he has come to love his Catherine but sees the world as someone that kills with no question. Everything Henry does now revolves around Catherine. His love for her grows as when he is away at the front lines. His uniform is now star-less because he wants nothing to do with war, the faded part of his uniform showed the stars had been removed. He then comes across charming people that not only offer him shelter, but also clothing. Theres a closet. Take anything you want. My dear fellow, you dont want to buy clothes (242) but Henry responds that he would much rather pay for the clothes. Henrys actions are now more powerful and also shows us that he has more responsibility in him, something that he really did not know how to do at the starting point of the novel. Being away from Catherine improves his ability to take action and make him into a better person that he can be. But later his dreams of Catherine being near him are coming true and has her near. While they are together in the hotel room Henry explains to Catherine that if people bring so much courage to this world the world has to kill them to break them, so of course it kills them. The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry (249). He tries to convince himself that he will be all right since he has escaped the war, little did he know that he was not able to escape freely, but to find out that Catherine had died with the baby they had made together. Ever since then Henry is not able to become the person he had been wanting to be. He ends up being a lonely man, with no family, that sees the world and everyone in it, against him, and nobody there to guide him any longer. Catherines fast death concluded his idea on having that there is life left that war took from him. In conclusion, Ernest Hemingway shows us how war can basically destroy not only a family but also a person that is left without it. Hemingway has Frederic Henrys character to demonstrate that there is always a need to escape from the destructiveness of war in order to keep sanity in ones self. With Frederic Henry as Hemingways model, shows us that you cannot have a rainbow without a little bit of rain, which means that even though Henry was put into awful situations like death, he was able to find the person he was destined to become.

iceman - preservation Essay -- essays research papers fc

1. Explain why the iceman was so well preserved? ( source one) It is said that a frozen body will stay preserved over hundreds, even thousand of years. During the first stage of investigations Austrian archaeologist Konrad Spindler researched the layout which had proved that the iceman’s body position and placement of weapons were preserved in the same position from when the Iceman had died, it had also been proved that the body was initially covered in a thin layer of snow which had helped complete the freeze drying process before it turned into ice. The body had been so well preserved because of the depth that the Iceman was actually lying in the ground, which was near the watershed (watershed meaning a line of high land where streams on one side flow into one river or sea and streams on the other side flow into another.) This meant that a glacier would be able to develop above him throughout the next millennia without moving his position down hill. In this position he was able to remain buried, frozen, covered and protected by the cold over a period of 5,300 years as the worlds oldest, best preserved natural mummy. 2a) What purpose do you think the tattoo served? (Source 2) Scientists believe that the Iceman’s tattoo’s were first applied in 3,200 BC, the first evidence of acupuncture. Based on this information I believe that this ‘cruciform tattoo’ was marked on the iceman’s body in order to serve as a medical and therapeutic purpose, as it was discovered that he suffered from Acute Arthritis, Worms and Diarrhoea. Dr Frank Bahr (President of the German Academy for Acupuncture) who studies the trends and patterns of the iceman’s tattoos, believes that the cruciform, meaning cross-shape, tattoo and a master point tattoo on his back were applied in order to treat rheumatism. Bahr says â€Å""These points would still be selected by the best acupuncturists today." "It is the most common combination for treating rheumatic illness." Bahr also discovered 15 other smaller groups of tattoos marked on the Iceman’s back and legs which form an ancient acupuncture chart developed in central Europe, 2000 years before china. Bahr states â€Å"I was amazed , 80% of the points correspond to those used in Acupuncture today.† 2b) How does this influence previous historical concept of body art? Competitive Forces: Jenny’s Closet Party has been facing challenges over the last few years with consumers shopping in the thrift and resale arenas. The once known dismal second-hands stores offering outdated clothing have become the ultimate treasure hunt for unique finds at a great price. Much of the recent growth can be attributed to young shoppers, many of whom are passing on trips to the mall in favor of thrift stores (Tully, 2012). Resale stores offer a variety of unique finds at a fraction of the cost of retail stores and propose great risk to new startup companies like Jenny’s Closet Party. The Goodwill industry is a well-known non-profit organization that has been around for over 100 years. There huge targeted audience loves bargain shopping who are drawn by shopping incentives and those by who donate to their cause of giving back to the community. â€Å"We provide employment, job training and other community-based programs for people looking to advance their careers, build their skills and further their education† (Goodwill Industry International, 2014). Economic Forces: With a fluctuated economy and staggering unemployment rates many consumers have become more frugal with how they spend their money. Although the retail industry has experienced growth, the resale industry is blossoming and is making great head way to become the new trend for preferred shopping. While many businesses close their doors every day, resale remains healthy and continues to be one of the fastest growing segments of retail (NARTS, 2014). Consumers are seeking cleaver ways to save money and the affordability of shopping at malls with high markup priced garb is not an option. With millions of people looking for ways to save money in tough economic times, a growing number of consumers have turned to resale shops to find their clothes, furniture and household goods (Tully, 2012). The  Northwest Indiana Region’s Gross Revenue Product (GRP) over the past 3 years (2009-2011) has gradually increased by 3%. Porter County’s population is 166,557 (2008-2012) with the median household income was $62,457 compared to the states average of $48,374, of this population 50.95% are women (U.S. Census Bureau, 2014). Over the course of the year, household purchases rose by 0.5 (U.S. Department of Commerce, 2014). This shows that women in the Northwest Indiana Region have buying power which has influentially contributed to the region’s economic growth. Technology Forces: Technology is rapidly evolving and is unprecedented in the business industry. Technology is vital and plays a major role in the success or demise of a company; ultimately impacting processes, pricing, promotions and placement of products and services. Technology force is used just about in every capacity of a business operation, from finances, book keeping and cash registers down to marketing. Social Media mediums such as Pinterest, YouTube and Facebook are some of the most popular ways in which technology has to connect with consumers. Retailers with Wi-Fi allows customers to use their Smart Phones to research products, compare prices, and download coupons with apps to make purchases. Due to the rapidly growing competition of on-line shopping, in-store retailers and swapping businesses must set themselves apart by meeting the customers’ needs and provide them with the ultimate one-on-one experience and technology can effectively help with this. Legal and Regulatory Forces: Jenny’s Closet Party is a limited liability company. A legal limited liability company is a hybrid-type of legal structure that provides the limited liability features of a corporation and the tax efficiencies and operational flexibility of a partnership (small business association 2014). Although, LLC’s have similar characteristics as corporation and partnership, the government does not hold them accountable to the same standards, structure and tax laws. To start an LLC one should research and decide what type of business they would like to organize. Specific documents to establish a business should be filed with the Secretary of State to start a business (procedures may vary from state to state). Information submitted should include: Business name, registering, creating agreements and articles  of incorporation. Once the company has been incorporated you will required to secure licensures, permits, EIN number, tax status and other required paperwork. Once all the necessary paperwork is complete and the business is established, the next steps should include obtaining insurance and doing the necessary footwork to get the business up and running such as networking, creating the brands image, and securing the necessary finances. Political Forces: The political forces that have a direct effect on Jenny’s Closet LLC and other business are the stability or instability of the government, economic/trade policies, tax rates and different events that happen in our communities and throughout the nation. These factors can affect how consumer spending. Consumers are more incline to shop at stores like Jenny’s Closet and resale outlet stores. The resale, consignment and thrift store industries has boomed in the aftermath of recession in the 1990’s. For this included an increased need for households to sell unused items for cash and reduced quantities of disposable income that made it necessary for people to shop at cheaper outlets (NARTS, 2014). Social Cultural Forces: As society and cultures change, so should your business. In order to have a successful business, one must recognizes and adjust (according to the current times) in order to succeed. Some socio-economical dynamics that businesses must adapt to as the world evolves: demographics, marketing/advertisement, trends (staying on top of consumer preferences) and external factors that may require adjustments within the company.

Factors Affecting Nigerias Underdevelopment Essay

According to an economist the idea of development is a situation whereby there is an increase in a nations GNP and GDP, leading to an increase in growth .but to a sociologist this is a surface definition as development or rather a country is regarded as developed when such increase is affecting the living condition of its people even to the smallest group in the society. Where we don’t only calculate numbers and figures and structures but can see the positive change of things in the life of the people, both the rich, average and poor. Then such a society would be regarded as developed. For example the living conditions of the USA. Nigeria the most populated country in Africa filled with its endowed natural resources, and according to the â€Å"united nations statistics Nigeria is the 8th most populous county in the world with a population of 2.3%† (UN 2011).but the country still suffers the decay of underdevelopment due to certain avoidable factors that stand as unavoidable. What actually is underdevelopment? W.A Lewis 1963 says that a country may be â€Å"underdeveloped in the sense that its technology is backward when compared with that of other countries or in the sense that its institutions are relatively unfavorable to investment, or in the sense that capital resources per head are low when compared with western Europe or in the sense that output per head is low or in the sense that it has valuable natural resources that has not yet begun use† (extracted by opafola 1996). Agreeing to what Lewis has said so well underdevelopment can be explored from another dimension which in a way he seemed to have ignored, it is a situation whereby the quality of life of the majority of its people is low. The causes or factors of Nigeria’s underdevelopment can be divided into 2 which are both external and internal. â€Å"External includes slavery, colonialism, neo- colonialism and the worldwide recession† (Rodney 1972), with which in my opinion is a fact for our underdevelopment the foundation. Also the internal factors include bribery and corruption, poor leadership, bad patriotism from citizens etc. which actually is avoidable. FACTORS AFFECTING NIGERIA’S UNDERDEVELOPMENT 1. Bribery and Corruption This is the greatest factor that has put Nigeria where it is today, the issue of â€Å"corruption† this is an internal factor. According to the Longman dictionary of contemporary English new edition â€Å"corruption is define as dishonest, illegal or immoral behavior, especially from someone with power†. In Africa as a whole research has seen it that most African leaders are corrupt in nature, leading to their backwardness in development of their economy. Taking a cue from the late Attah Williams of Ghana, he executed all the corrupt leaders in Ghana for the stability of the country, and from recent news Ghana has taking a new turn in its development process (silver bird news 23rd august 2012). The issue of corruption is Nigeria’s biggest challenge that is eating into our economic growth leading to money laundering and looting of public funds meant for the improving living condition of citizens. Corruption now is found in every facets of the Nigerian system especially the political aspect has leaders steal for selfish gain. The transparency international corruption index 2011 ranked Nigeria 143th of 183 counties in the world that is developed, also on the scale of 10 (very clean) to 0 (highly corrupt) Nigeria scored 2.4%, between 2010 and 2011 Nigeria’s position declined from 9 places scoring 2.4% from a possible 10 showing the greatest sign that efforts at correcting corruption had been very inadequate in the last year† (business day, Wednesday September 6 2011). This shows the height of corruption in our country, taking the story of the former governor James ibori of delta state who was jailed for 16 years for money laundering in April 2012 by the American judiciary after being discharged by a Nigerian court due to bribe for a case he was still found guilty. Nigeria’s problem is this menace and until there is a stop to it I wonder where we are heading to. 2.Neo-colonialism or imperialism This is an external factor of Nigeria’s underdevelopment; it is the highest form of exploitation from the British countries to their colonies after independence. Nigeria has contributed to its economic backwardness, as it â€Å"promotes the maintenance of foreign domination and enhances neo-colonialism and the flowering of subjugationism† (onimode, 1981). Imperialism has always been an exploitative phenomenon, which was the initial motive for colonization. Nigeria has been seen as a dumping ground for most British counties, making it difficult for us to produce our own goods. Also the fact that we are primary producers with fewer technicalities to produce our raw materials into finished products makes it a means of imperialism as we export our goods at the rate determined by the British colonies and still import back at a higher cost. For example the crude oil, Nigeria is the largest country with the crude oil but the poorest in economic state due lack of technicality in transforming crude oil into petrol which led to the issue of sucidy removal in January 1st 2012, even after which things haven’t changed as fuel scarcity hits most part of the country e.g. Abuja, Lagos etc. as at 19th September 2012. 3.Poor leadership According to john c. Maxwell â€Å"leadership is about influence† and niyi adesonya sees it â€Å"as not just influence but also inspiration†. The idea of Nigeria’s leadership is just based on selfish gain of eating the â€Å"national cake† and leaving the main aim of governance. Research has seen it that Africa is one continent whereby its leaders are older than the country itself and Nigeria is not left out, as most of our past leaders are much older than the country itself. The issue of poor leadership is also a contributing factor whereby due to corruption leaders make laws to favour their actions, as each time a ruler comes in seat we keep on amending the constitution to suite political parties, politicians make empty promise during election campaigns when put office little or nothing is done in such community and citizens keep suffering in squalor and begin to govern themselves providing the necessities for their comfort. Due to poor leadership the recent issue of flood all over most riverine area would have occurred, this is because a developed country would have been prepared to channel the water released from the Cameroonian dam into another dam. But since Nigerian political elites spend time on unnecessary things like the introduction of the 5000 naira note, citizens are homeless. Poor leadership is a contributing factor of Nigeria’s underdevelopment, as the main issues are not critically tacked to solve other things. It has led to flamboyant spending of public funds whereby an average senator in the house of representative is paid unnecessary bills like the seating allowance, wardrobe allowance etc. aside the salary they earn, why won’t people kill to seat on political power? Nigeria is one country whereby the president earns more than the president of United States. As they continue to buy properties that they don’t need instead of investing in profitable business. 4.Bad patriotism This is also a causing factor for our underdevelopment from in my opinion, it is obvious that most Nigerians are aware of our backwardness and they don’t try to help matters instead they add to the problem itself. By disobeying or making difficult certain rules meant to help the country, this is because they believe it is another lie to eat from us. From the AIT news in August Hilary Clinton’s last visit to Nigeria in 2012, she told the president to have the will power of taking certain stringent rules and standing firm for example the handiwork of governor Fashola of Lagos state is termed credible as Lagos with its massive population is actually adjusting to change. This is because even as unpatriotic most Lagosians are governor Fashola still took a stand, Nigeria’s problem is also citizen built as persons no what is right and refuse doing it for no reason. How to use social media in your next job search

How to use social media in your next job search The future is now! Social media is the best! Or at least it’s fast, which can sometimes feel like the same thing. And social media really is great- we’re more connected to each other, and opportunities, than ever before. But if you want to take social media and harness its power for your job search, there are definitely smart, targeted ways to go about it. Build your network.A network has always been a key to a successful career- and what is social media, if not built-in networks? Adding people to your circles on LinkedIn or following them on Twitter/Facebook/Instagram/whatever comes next is great, but you have to do something with that connection. Use the social networks to engage people you admire, and post thoughtful comments on their posts. If you want to rekindle a relationship with an old boss or colleague who could provide an introduction or recommendation, send periodic â€Å"Hey, was thinking of you, just wanted to see how you’re doing with that project these days† notes.Clean house. Before you use social media to hunt for connections or job openings, make sure your profiles are professional. That means creating accounts in your name (rather than your high school handle), and cleansing your profiles of shady photos or public rants about your pet political issue. Or you can keep all of those things, but make them private and create new accounts that reflect Professional You.Think about your content strategy. If you’re using your social media presence to position yourself as a widget-analysis guru, make sure the content you post reflects that. Take time each week to post links to interesting articles, or ask your followers to weigh in on a particular topic. Some sites, like LinkedIn, let you post your own essays and articles, and share them out. That’s one way to get on the radar of people who might not otherwise see you in their feeds.Keep it current.Once you’ve set up your social media presence, donâ€℠¢t stop updating. If you’re linking to your social media accounts in your resume or if you’re leaving them public for people to find when they search for you, then you want to keep things up to date.See it as a living resume.Once you submit a resume, it’s pretty locked-in. If you keep a robust, updated social media presence, that can let you add details in real time. For example, let’s say you sent Company Z your resume a month ago, but their hiring moves pretty slowly. And in the interim, you’ve finished taking a class on HTML. Make sure you’ve updated your LinkedIn profile or your portfolio on your personal website. That way, when Company Z finally starts checking into your deal, they can see that you’re actively building and improving. It’s also a handy tool for your own reference. When you go to send an updated resume, having information stored somewhere central can help remind you of the points you want to include.Social m edia isn’t the only job search tool you have at your disposal, but it can be a powerful one if you use it in a targeted, mindful way. Good luck!
